Job description:
Motivation: Water (H2O) ? being the sole gas existing in all three states of aggregation in the atmosphere ? constitutes an enormously crucial trace gas. As a very efficient absorber of infrared radiation, it is responsible for ~2/3 of the natural greenhouse effect of ~33?C. Moreover, the proper description of the occurrence of clouds and of their microphysical properties is actually the major shortcoming of today?s climate models.

One exciting and elegant technique to study the many atmospheric processes, in which water is involved, is the in situ measurement of the isotope ratios D/H, 17O/16O, and 18O/16O of water vapour onboard aircraft.

Job description and requirements: The successful applicant will help to develop, construct, and deploy a tunable diode laser absorption spectrometer (TDLAS) on board the CARIBIC passenger aircraft (Airbus A340-600 of Lufthansa Airlines) and the German research aircraft HALO (Gulfstream GV-550).

The candidate needs a university degree in Physics or a related discipline. He/she is expected to be self-motivated and enthusiastic about instrument development and conducting measurements onboard aircraft. The candidate will also be involved in interpretation of data gathered during measurement campaigns. Interest in engineering physics and programming skills are required. Good communication skills in English are expected.

The position involves multi-disciplinary research with a high degree of work autonomy, and the use of the latest technical equipment.
