The Chair of Environmental Policy and Economics at the Institute for Environmental Decisions, ETH Zurich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology), invites applications for one PhD position for three years, with one year of guaranteed funding. The starting date is expected to be in early 2008, depending on the successful candidate’s availability.
Increasing demand for biofuels has led to questions about their potential impacts on land use and household welfare in tropical countries. In particular, the expansion of biofuel plantations has reportedly led, directly and indirectly, to deforestation at the agricultural frontier with implications for policy related to energy use, land use, and climate change. This PhD position will investigate these impacts in detail, combining theoretical approaches with an empirical study in a country with biofuel ‘outgrower’ schemes, such as Indonesia, China or Brazil.
At present, the Chair has guaranteed funds for the first year of the PhD position, and is actively seeking funds for the second and third years in addition to funds for fieldwork. The successful candidate would be expected to assist in the search for funding. The successful candidates will be full-time PhD student at ETH Zurich, under the supervision of Professor Stefanie Engel and Dr. Charles Palmer. In addition to their doctoral research and related PhD courses, they will provide part-time assistance (10%) to the Chair. More information about the Chair and its research interests is available at http://www.pepe.ethz.ch.
Requirements: Candidates should have a Master’s degree in Economics, Environmental and Resource Economics, or Agricultural Economics. Knowledge of agricultural household models is desirable. The position requires excellent communication and writing skills in English. Other languages relevant for fieldwork purposes would be desirable.
How to apply: To apply for these positions please E-mail a complete CV, including the following information, to: charles.palmer@env.ethz.ch : (i) Educational history with the names of universities, years of attendance and completed degrees; (ii) a list of attended courses in economics (particularly microeconomics and econometrics) specifying the grades; (iii) names of two academic referees that could be contacted for more information.
The received applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis until the position is filled. Only those applicants whose profiles are likely to fit the positions will be notified for further details and interviews.
