We are looking for a PhD student for a 3 year funded FWF-project.
The position will be available at the Institute of Biophysics and Nanosystems Research (Austrian Academy of Sciences) (Biomembranes group) in September 2008.
The objective of the project is to develop novel anticancer therapeutics derived from human peptides by a new approach. The strategy uses membrane-active peptides that will specifically target the cancer cell and destroy it within minutes by damaging its cell membrane without a need for binding to specific receptors or interaction with DNA. The specific target of these cationic peptides, is the negatively charged phospholipid phosphatidylserine (PS), that is exposed on the surface of plasma membranes of cells of certain cancer types. Due to these characteristics major problems of chemotherapeutics like severe adverse effects and formation of resistance can be overcome.
The PhD student will optimize peptides derived from human host defense in their interaction with cancer cell mimetic models. At the same time in vitro studies with cancer cell lines will give information on the success of the screening.
Methods: Peptide lipid interactions in model and in vitro systems are studied by several techniques, such as fluorescence microscopy and spectroscopy, calorimetry, X-ray.
Requirements: Applicants should have a background in either biochemistry and/or biophysics and have at least some practice in handling in vitro systems.
Experience with cell culture techniques is advantageous but not implicitly necessary.
