PhD position in cell-biology at ETH Zürich,Switzerland
The Kroschewski and Barral groups study the role and mechanisms of cellular diversity in cellular communities, using mammalian cells in the context of tissues (Kroschewski), and yeast cells (Barral). During the formation of organ substructures like cysts the establishment of cell polarity needs to be well coordinated between cells. Preliminary data indicate that within cell aggregates on their way to cysts, one individual cell emerges as the master, initiates polarization, and then helps directing the proper polarization of the others. The goal of this project is to determine what are the cues used by the cells to dictate which of them becomes the master. Particularly, we will investigate the possibility that this decision correlates with the asymmetric segregation of aging determinants to one of the cells during cell division.
Therefore, we will investigate the intriguing possibility that an age-related hierarchy influences cell-cell interactions and the role of the individual cells in the community. In yeast, aging determinants include extra-chromosomal DNA circles. Learning from what is known in yeast, we will investigate the possibility that similar processes contribute to cell diversity in mammalian cells as well. At the technical level, the project will include the use of 3-dimensional cultures conditions, high-resolution 4D microcopy and RNAi technologies. This PhD-project will be carried out as a joint effort between the Kroschewski and Barral groups.
Both groups are located in a highly international and multidisciplinary environment. Good communication skills and the ability to rapidly learn new methods are required. The candidate will be asked to integrate into the MLS PhD program (http://www.lifescience-graduateschool.ch/index.php?id=17).
