PhD position in Chemical Physics, Lunds University, Sweden
Job Description:Research on melanin photochemistry. Eumelanins, the black to brown variants of melanin pigments found in human skin, hair and eyes are considered to be highly heterogeneous oligomers/polymers derived from the oxidation of two main building blocks, 5,6-dihydroxyindole (DHI) and 5,6-dihydroxyindole-2-carboxylic acid (DHICA). Eumelanin is believed to protect the skin against sunlight induced damage, although so far no clear evidence exists whether eumelanin is solely photoprotective or also phototoxic. There is presently very little knowledge about the primary photochemistry of melanin and its building blocks. The aim of this project is to clarify the UV-dissipative and phototoxic mechanisms of eumelanin building blocks of varying complexity, as well as the full pigment. To achieve this goal a combination of optical and X-ray spectroscopy methods will be employed to characterize the UV-induced processes. Various forms of ultrafast spectroscopy will be particularly important tools. The project is a collaboration project with organic chemists for molecule synthesis and with theoretical chemists for quantum chemistry calculations. The long term goal of the project is to provide knowledge about melanin photochemistry that can help understand skin cancer and other uv-induced skin deceases.
Entry Requirements:Master degree in chemistry or physics; strong basic education in general chemistry, physical chemistry, spectroscopy, photochemistry, optics, laser physics. Experience of work with advanced spectroscopy equipment. Programming. Data analysis.
Basis of Assessment:Those who hold an educational stipend or a doctoral student appointment must first be accepted for postgraduate study. To be accepted, a student must be judged to have the competence necessary to complete a course of postgraduate study.
Additional Information:An educational stipend is awarded for the first 18 months of full-time study, following which time the student is appointed as a full doctoral student. Regulations concerning educational stipends for doctoral students can be found in SFS 1995:938 and 1998:81. Regulations concerning appointment as a full PhD student can be found in HF 5 Chap 1-7§§ and SFS 1998:80.
In addition to pursuing postgraduate studies, the doctoral student may also perform other duties – including research, teaching and administration – according to the specific regulations.
