PhD position in color naming and color image processing

Applications are invited for a PhD position at the Dept. of Computing of the University of Verona.
The position is for three years starting on Jan. 2009 and it is funded by the Italian Ministry of University and Research.

The successful candidate will work in collaboration with the University of Poitiers and the University of Aix-Marseille II,
and she/he will spend about 10 months in France.

The salary is of 1100 euros/months, with an increment of 50% during the stay abroad.

The project is highly interdisciplinary as it engenders research in the fields of visual perception and image processing.
The perceptual mechanisms underlying color vision and categorization will be investigated with the goal of designing
a model to be exploited for computer vision applications. A more detailed description is provided here below.

ABSTRACT

Computational models of color naming naturally lead to the design of automatic agents able to predict and reproduce the performance of human observers in sensing (through cameras or other kind of equipments), identifying and classifying colors, as pertaining to one out of a set of predefined classes with a certain degree of confidence and in a reproducible manner. There are many open issues in this respect, like reaching invariance with respect to illumination (color constancy), modelling of spatial effects (chromatic induction, simultaneous contrast), definition of a structured syntax for color naming, definition of a computational model suitable for computer vision applications. Last but not least, the investigation of the relation with the language will allow shaping the model on the user geographical location. The target applications are semantics based image retrieval, image interpretation and classification.
