A PhD position within experimental surface physics is available at Department of Physics, NTNU.
Job Description: The research activity is directed to investigations of palladium membranes and model systems. The position is part of a project funded by Research Council of Norway, entitled “Understanding catalytic effects in Pd alloy model systems and membranes through advanced characterization and modelling”, which is a collaboration between Department of Chemical Engineering and Department of Physics at NTNU. The project is focused on understanding catalytic properties of Pd-based membrane systems through surface science studies and theoretical modelling. The PhD position includes synchrotron radiation spectroscopy studies of adsorbates, reactions and electronic properties of membrane model system surfaces as well as scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) investigations of corresponding surface structures. The synchrotron experiments are performed at facilities abroad while the STM work is taking place at NTNU.
Applicants holding a university degree (Master of Science or equivalent) in physics qualify for the position. The position requires a background in solid-state physics. Candidates with experience in experimental solid-state physics will be preferred.
PhD fellowships at NTNU are normally awarded for a total of 3 years with the possibility of up to 1year extension with 25% teaching duties.
The position is organized at the Department of Physics. Currently, there are 26 professors, 10 associate professors, 7 adjunct professors, 55 PhD research fellows and 25 postdoctoral positions appointed at the Department of Physics.
The current research fields at the Department include optics, energy and environmental physics, didactic physics, biophysics and medical technology, condensed matter physics, surface science, nanotechnology and theoretical physics. Further information is available at: http://www.ntnu.no/fysikk/english

Further information can be obtained from Professor Anne Borg, Department of Physics, NTNU, tel. +47 41662984, e-mail: anne.borg@ntnu.no .
The regulations for PhD programmes at NTNU state that a Master degree or equivalent with at least 5 years of studies and an average grade of A or B within a scale of A-E for passing grades (A best) for the two last years of the MSc is required. Candidates from universities outside Norway are kindly requested to send a Diploma Supplement or a similar document, which describes in detail the study and grade system and the rights for further studies associated with the obtained degree. http://ec.europa.eu/education/policies/rec_qual/recognition/diploma_en.html

The appointment of the PhD will be made according to Norwegian guidelines for universities and university colleges and to the general regulations regarding university employees. Applicants must agree to participate in organized doctoral study programs within the period of the appointment and have to be qualified for the PhD-study. A contract will be drawn up regarding the period of appointment and work-related duties.

The national labour force must reflect the composition of the population to the greatest possible extent. It is therefore a major political objective to achieve a balance of age and gender and to recruit persons with an immigrant background. Immigrants are encouraged to apply for this post. NTNU wants to increase the proportion of women in its scientific posts. Women are encouraged to apply.
