PhD position in microbial ecology and gut fermentation.

Research at the Laboratory of Food Biotechnology focuses on the development of both fundamental and applied knowledge on food bacteria and selected metabolic activities and relative technologies for application in high quality, safe and healthy foods, and potential benefits on consumer health. An important area of our research in Food Biotechnology is the development of gut fermentation models for studying the effects of environmental and food factors on gut microbial balance and activities.

The main objective of the project will be the development of a new in vitro colonic fermentation model using imbalanced microbiota from obese subjects. The new system will allow investigation and screening of diet modulation on abnormal gut microbiota under well controlled conditions. The PhD student will be also involved in a clinical including gut microbiota analysis in collaboration with the Laboratory of Human Nutrition (ETHZ-Institute for Food Science and Nutrition).

The candidate should have a Master (or equivalent) degree in microbiology, biotechnology, food science and nutrition or related field, and should be interested in a complex project covering gut microbiology, molecular biology, gut fermentation and nutrition. The ideal candidate has solid background in gut microbiology and fermentation process and strong interest in nutrition. Excellent knowledge of English (oral and written) is important and knowledge of German can be an advantage.
