Reproducible production of model biofilm for testing of cleaning efficiency
Biofilms can corrode or destroy materials and can act as a persistent source of contaminations and diseases. Removal of biofilm is difficult and appropriate methods need to be developed. In order to compare such methods, formation and detection of biofilms have to be standardized.
This project aims at formulating a standard procedure to produce monospecific biofilm on a large scale for industrial/commercial applications. The tasks will be:

  • Select appropriate microbial strains (bacteria, fungi, yeast) based on their attachment capacities and abundance in the modelled environment
  • Select the most appropriate set-up for reproducible biofilm growth (e.g. batch, chemostat, flow cell)
  • Optimize growth conditions in bench-top biofilm reactor
  • Demonstrate the feasibility of scale-up
  • Optimize conservation and shipping procedure
  • The successful candidate holds a Diploma or Masters in Biology, Microbiology, Environmental Sciences or related discipline. Experience with microbiology is an advantage.
Please submit your application together with a CV including indication of the classes followed, a motivation letter as well as two to three references, no later than August 20, 2007. more..
