PhD Position in Montpellier (France)

3 year PhD grant (around 1200€/month) available in Centre d’Ecologie Fonctionnelle et Evolutive, Montpellier (CEFE/CNRS : www.cefe.cnrs.fr). The subject is to estimate historical, present and future carbone fluxes between biosphere and atmopshere in the fire prone vegetation in Languedoc Roussillon (France) with special interest in uncertainties related to changes in scales (temporal and spatial) and inputs (climate, vegetation types, soils, fire). Historical data are mostly available within a GIS for use in biogeochemical models, as well as climate scenarios. Spatial and temporal analysis will have to be performed, to propose / model scenario of regional dynamic. Based on these, biogeochemical models and vegetation dynamic models will be used for fire risk estimates and the induced vegetation dynamic for the next 100 years.

Applicants will need knowledge in computing (C++, Pascal, Matlab, R-gui), statistics, basics of GIS and interested in biosphere/atmosphere interactions. The team is mainly French but all the members speak English and international students are around all year long. Montpellier is an international student city with many ERASMUS programs.
