PhD Position in Road Accident Modelling is available in Technical University of Denmark.

DTU Transport invites applications for a 3 year PhD position starting in autumn 2010 or according to further agreement. The project is financed by the Danish Council for Strategic Research, DTU Transport and DTU through a research programme in Sustainable Transport and Infrastructure.

Transport is indispensable for mobility and economic growth of any society. Unfortunately, transport also leads to non-desired effects such as accidents. Scientific knowledge about the relation between the volume of traffic and a number of other explanatory variables on one hand and the number and severity of accidents on the other is limited. The PhD project aims at investigating, quantifying and modelling the link. The PhD project is closely related to the other research activities in the research programme and will contribute to improve the foundations for prioritising road safety measures.

More specifically, the PhD project will focus on:

  • Managing road safety databases and preparing data for statistical road accident analysis, model development and parameter estimation. A significant amount of resources will be spent on data preparation on different statistics and databases. E.g. police road accident records, emergency room road accident records and a transport database with micro data (MD-CARS) held by DTU Transport.
  • Outlining and contributing to the formulation of micro, meso and macro based road accident models, based on theoretical investigations and available Danish data on transport behaviour and accident records.
  • Estimating the formulated models in cooperation with researchers at DTU Transport, Institute for Economics at University of Copenhagen and international experts.
  • Applying the model(s) for policy analysis and formulate recommendations for use in relation to socioeconomic welfare analysis.

Requirements:
Candidates must hold a master’s degree or equivalent academic qualifications e.g. in Transport Planning, Engineering, Mathematics, Geography or Economics. Skills and interest in managing large datasets, as well as mathematical and statistical modelling are essential, and a good overview of policy analysis methods will be an advantage.
