The Institute for Solar Energy Research (ISFH) in Hamelin, near Hanover, Germany, is an internationally recognised leader in solar energy research, and is especially prominent in the fields of photovoltaics and solar thermal systems. It receives funding from the government to undertake research and development in cooperation with industry partners. Its 130 employees focus on activities ranging from basic research into material properties to process and equipment development, including module technology.

We are currently offering a:

Position in Semiconductor Modelling (PostDoc, PhD, or Research Associate)

We are looking for someone with a thorough knowledge of semiconductors and/or numerical modelling. Ideally, you – that is, the successful applicant – will have a university degree in either Physics or Electrical Engineering, or a related area.

You will model aspects of crystalline silicon solar cells which are currently under development in industry-relevant research projects. This includes cutting-edge cell structures, whose creation has been made possible only recently by the use of laser processing. You will apply state-of-the art simulation techniques in two and three dimensions, and you will base your model on independently-measured device parameters. You will also use 64-bit servers and a variety of software to model light-trapping, semiconductor properties, electrical circuits and semiconductor processing.

You are expected to be self-motivated and to be able to acquire new competencies easily and rapidly. You need to be systematic and thorough in your approach, and at the same time bring a dynamic creativity to the work. You must also be able to move seamlessly between working independently and working collaboratively.

At ISFH, staff members contribute to an inspiring R&D environment that is dedicated to sustainable development. You will be integrated into a team of researchers and students who work mainly experimentally, and you will be supervised by Dr Pietro Altermatt, a theoretical physicist with an exceptional track record in semiconductor device modelling.

If desired, you may obtain a doctoral degree from the University of Hanover while working at ISFH. In this case, you are expected to design testing devices, and to conduct some extensive characterisation work on fabricated samples (using equipment provided by the Institute).

If, on the other hand, you are offered and accept this position as a PostDoc, part of your time will be allocated to the pursuit of your own research interests.

The position is limited to two years, with a possible extension. The proposed salary is based on the salary scheme TV-L. All of our staff appointments are based on a policy of equal employment opportunity (EEO) and affirmative action. As this position involves mostly computer work, it may be particularly suited to applicants with a disability.

Please email your application by 7th of April 08 in either English or German (without photo) to career@isfh.de and include two references as well as scans of your relevant qualifications. If you have any questions regarding the advertised position, please email Pietro Altermatt at altermatt@isfh.de.
