PhD position in Sensory Biophysics/Neurophysiology
October 2, 2008The Department of Otorhinolaryngology and the University of Groningen Centre for Audiology (UACG) provide clinical care, teaching and scientific research in the field of hearing disorders, speech/language disorders and voice disorders. The department has special significance as a leading regional reference centre.
Diagnostics, treatment and rehabilitation of patients is provided in multidisciplinary teams built up around specific fields, including:
- cochlear implants
- children with hearing problems and speech/language problems
- tinnitus. The duties of all UACG staff include supervising student trainees and participating in scientific research.
Functiebeschrijving
Job description:
A grant awarded by the Heinsius Houboltfonds has provided funds for a researcher/PhD student for the Tinnitus research project. The subsidized research project is part of a study of the neurophysiological mechanisms that lie at the root of tinnitus. The main assumption in the research project is that tinnitus is caused by deviant neural activity in the auditory areas of the brain. Conducting animal experiments will form one of your duties. In addition, you will further develop the experimental setup for electrophysiological research and conduct measurement of neural brain activity in laboratory animals. This part of the research mainly focuses on developing and implementing methods for describing neural brain activity by means of signal analysis techniques. These techniques will subsequently be used to study the effects of local medicinal interventions in the auditory organ (the cochlea) on brain activity.

I m i eligible for a scholarship if i have a diploma in science education specializing in physics and chemistry. i m a needy student from Kenya.
i would be please if my application is considered.
Dear Sir,
This is Ashok.S, I have done M.Sc in Physics and M.Phil Biophysics from NIMHANS, Bangalore.
I am interested in Ph.D position and to be a part of your program.
Dear Sir,
I am Saeed Salari from Iran. I have graduated in DVM (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine) degree in 2007.
I have investigated the neurophysiological mechanisms of food intake in broilers.
There are many gut-brain peptides that act as signals in food intake. By intracerebroventricular (ICV) injection of them we can find out the effect of those peptides in food intake mechanisms. On the other hand, by ICV injection companion with PCR we can find out the central interaction between tow peptides that inject in ICV manner, as I did in my thesis.
Furthermore, in my thesis, I have learned some techniques with other analytical techniques, for example, Semiquantative RT_ PCR.
My supervisors in Iran (Dr. H. Jonaidi and Dr. M. M. Yaghoobi) have some articles about that subject in reliable journals and they will confirm me, if it is needed.
I would like to go on my education in Ph.D course and to join your esteemed university. Kindly help me if it is possible.
With best regards
Saeed Salari

M.Phil(Biophysics) -“Wavelet analysis is tool for analyzing many real world signals such as music, speech, bio-potentials etc. The wavelet transform expands the signal into a time scale representation similar to time frequency representation. Wavelet transform can be applied to both continuous and discrete signals and plays an important role in analysis of non-stationary signals.
BAEP (Brainstem auditory evoked potential) waveform was decomposed using wavelet transform. Multiresolution decomposition method gives scale invariant interpretation of signal. It represent the signal in a manner that reveals waveform events on optimal scales of viewing resolution and decomposes the signal that are characteristics of different natural subsystems operating on different time and space is the parameter that defines the level of resolution of details in a particular view of waveforms that was not accessible at lower level resolution.
Wavelet decomposition of each BAEP was implemented through DSP package. Daubechies D4 wavelet was used for the decoposition. Each BAEP waveforms consist of 512 samples & its total duration was 20ms. Four detail function was obtained. The result of wavelet decomposion of BAEP waveform implies that the physiological response of brain stem to auditory stimuli has got definite time scale structure. The detail function of BAEP wave got different information content. The detail functions of BAEP waveforms shows characteristic change in abnormal human subject with reference to normal human subjects.
M.Sc (Physics)- Pyroelectric and Dielectic characterization of polycrystalline Potassium Nitrate ) Potassium nitrate has the (KNO3) aragonite structure (orthorhombic) at room temp. The crystal structure changes from orthorhombic to trigonal at about 130°C on heating. It has been reported that potassium nitrate is a good ferroelectric material at room temprature. One of the interesting application of ferromagnetic material is solid state battery formation. In KNO3 the solid state battery is formed above 105°C. And drastic change in e.m.f. observe at 130°C seem to corresponds to the phase transition of KNO3 crystals.
The dielectric constant of KNO3 decreases with temp. It has minimum value at cure point and increases beyond Curie point as temp. Increases. Curie temp .of KNO3 is 120°C which is the good agreements with behavior of dielectric constant of ferroelectric material.
The pyroelectric current increases with temp. It has is maximum at certain temperature and beyond it decreases. This maximum temperature called transition temp. TC (Curie temperature) is 62°C.The pyroelectric coefficient changes with temperature in same manner. This conclusion supported that a KNO3 is good ferroelectric material.
