Ph.D position in Switzerland

April 21, 2008

The harlequin ladybird, Harmonia axyridis, is an Asian insect that is presently invading Europe, representing a threat for native insect species. The PhD student will examine multitrophic interactions between Harmonia axyridis and native insects. We aim to study whether H. axyridis is likely to replace native coccinellids in Europe and to investigate the mechanisms involved in the displacement. We will focus not only on intraguild predation between coccinellid species but also on the role of competition for resources in this process. In addition, we aim to evaluate whether the invasion of H. axyridis poses a risk for native butterflies. The work will also include investigations on chemical defence mechanisms. The work will be carried out at CABI Europe-Switzerland in Delémont, Switzerland.

We are looking for a highly skilled and motivated person with a Master degree (or equivalent) in Biology/Ecology or Agriculture. Experience in predator-prey interactions, ladybirds or aphids would be an advantage.

Send your application and CV, including a letter of motivation (all in English), no later than 05.02.2008 to Dr. Marc Kenis, CABI Europe-Switzerland, 1 Rue des Grillons, 2800 Delémont, Switzerland, or via e-mail to m.kenis@cabi.org
