Description: Applications are invited for a PhD studentship in organic chemistry / chemical biology within the Institute of Fundamental Sciences, Massey University. The project will focus on the design, synthesis, and evaluation of novel organocatalysts that exploit the inherent chirality of various DNA motifs. The project is part of collaboration between Dr. Vyacheslav V. Filichev (DNA chemistry), Dr. Gareth J. Rowlands (organocatalysis) and Associative Professor Ashton Partridge (nanotechnology). The project is ideal for a student with a background and interest in organic chemistry who wishes to acquire expertise in a range of areas including synthetic chemistry, DNA synthesis and analysis as well as a variety of important analytic skills (e.g. NMR, HPLC, GC and mass spectrometry). The annual stipend is NZD 25,000 (tax-free) for a period of three years and student fees will also be paid. The successful applicant will have access to the equipment and resources of the Institute. Palmerston North is a small, lively student-orientated city, two hours north of the capital city, Wellington. The cost of living is relatively low and affordable housing is readily available. The city lies on the Manawatu River within thirty minutes of the coast and in close proximity to a wide variety of outdoor activities and attractions. Qualifications: An Honours degree in the Sciences or equivalent, enthusiasm and self-motivation. Experience: A background in synthetic organic chemistry is essential, and experience in DNA synthesis and analysis would be desirable. Start Date: January 1, 2008 or soon after.
