Description: Applications are invited for a PhD position in the group of Dr. Vyacheslav V. Filichev, Institute of Fundamental Sciences, Massey University. The project will focus on the design, synthesis, and characterisation of oligonucleotides as DNA triplex-forming agents. The project is part of a collaboration with Professor Michael Hausmann (Kirchhoff-Institute of Physics, University of Heidelberg, Germany), who is keen to employ the novel synthetic oligonucleotides as probes in COMBO-fluorescent in situ hybridization (COMBO-FISH) for gene labelling and visualization. The project is ideal for a student with a background and interest in biochemistry and the life sciences, who wishes to acquire expertise in a range of areas such as synthetic biochemistry, DNA analysis by convenient spectroscopy methods and biological testing. There will be opportunities for travelling to international conferences. The annual stipend is NZD 22,000 (tax-free) for a period of three years and student fees will also be paid. This stipend is funded by Marsden Fund for two years and by Massey University for one more year. The successful applicant will have access to the equipment and resources of the Institute. Palmerston North is a small, lively student-orientated city, two hours north of the capital city, Wellington. The cost of living is relatively low and affordable housing is readily available. The city lies on the Manawatu River within thirty minutes of the coast and in close proximity to a wide variety of outdoor activities and attractions. Qualifications: An Honours degree in the Sciences or equivalent, enthusiasm and self-motivation. Experience: A background in synthetic organic chemistry is essential, and experience in gel-electrophoresis is desirable. Start Date: January 1, 2008 or soon after.
