We are inviting applications of geoscientists with strong interest in

low-temperature thermochronology and geochemistry for a Ph.D.
- Salary level 13/2 TV-L -

-project to reveal the tectonic history and surface development of Central Tibet.

Topic:
In some tectonic blocks of Central Tibet the local morphology is characterised by highly elevated and well developed, flat plateaus. We aim to date the formation of these geomorphic features using the following methods: (i) Low-temperature thermochronology of the crystalline basement using apatite fission track and (U-Th)/He dating. (ii) Structural analysis of the major faults of the region. (iii) Provenance analysis, geo- and thermochronology of the sedimentary sequences, which are supposed to be contemporaneous with the formation of the plateaus.

Co-operation:
This research project forms the organic part of a Sino-German joint research activity on the development of Tibetan Plateau. Our immediate co-operation partner addresses the dating of the Quaternary evolution of the surface by cosmogenic isotopes. The field work and several aspects of the analyses of the sediments will be conducted in close co-operation with Chinese colleagues.
Requirements: The successful candidate has a broad geoscientific background (MSc or Diplom degree) with specific expertise in mineralogy, petrology, geochemistry and/or sedimentology. She/he has experience in field work, ability to work in an international team, and is fluent in English.

Employment:
We offer a two-year fixed-term contract with the possibility of extension to one more year in case of positive evaluation. The project is financed by the DFG (German Research Foundation). Ph.D. thesis is expected to be completed after 3 years.

Environment:
The Geoscience Center Göttingen (GZG) offers a wide range of state-of-the-art analytical facilities and an excellent environment for geological research. The working group at Sedimentology Department is composed of dynamic, highly motivated scientists (http://www.sediment.uni-goettingen.de).
Göttingen is a typical German university town with long traditions and flair, having students of 1/6 of the total population.

Earning:
Salary is based on the collective bargaining agreement of the German federal states, (TV-L, salary level 13). 50% TVL-13 for a ca. 25 year old Ph.D. student is about 18,000 Euro before taxation (tax and social insurances). Göttingen University wishes to increase the proportion of female academic staff and welcomes applications from women. Equally qualified handicapped persons are given preference.
