PhD Position in Trusted Services in Transport, UK
Job Description :
In the selection of services, including transport services, many factors influence individual choice. The assessment of the trustworthiness of a service option is an important factor, and there are many models that have been proposed to assess trust. Models have used techniques such as machine learning, probabilistic and possibilistic reasoning. Evidence used in making trust assessments include direct experience, reputation (reports of direct experience from others), and correlations between similar services from the same provider or between the same service from similar providers. Domains in which these models are applied, however, tend to be abstract e-commerce-like service/partner selection scenarios, where the “best” (i.e. highest rated) service is selected automatically and there is little prior experience of such applications in transport. Furthermore, in real-world service selection, the assessment of trust is only half the problem; little research has addressed the important question of how to model the decision to trust. Without a model of trust decision, decision-makers cannot take into account the risks/costs involved in a specific selection. Research addressing both the assessment of and the decision to trust grounded upon a real-world transport domain has a number of key potential benefits for both consumers and suppliers: models developed in this research may be used to aid humans in making decisions regarding service options within both virtual or physical transport marketplaces; and they may be used as part of simulations of transport systems in rural environments to, for example, explore the impact of pricing changes on transport supply and demand with populations of simulated agents.
Students should have a commitment to interdisciplinary research and should have a strong background in computer science or a closely related discipline. This studentship is associated with the £12M RCUK dot.rural Digital Economy Research Hub; see www.dotrural.ac.uk.
