Job Description:

There are currently ca. 65,000 total hip replacements per annum in the UK alone, and slightly more knee replacements.  In addition, sufferers of osteoarthritis and osteoporosis occupy about half of the orthopaedic beds in the UK.  Despite this, these two diseases are still not well understood, and much research into the physiology, mechanics and composition of bone is still necessary to provide a better understanding of the processes involved.  In addition, the search continues for ever improved bone replacement materials, both for aiding joint replacement surgery and for bone replacement.  The better we understand natural bone in health and disease, the better we can design such synthetic bone replacements.

The project comprises two parallel but interlinking strands; the first to characterise collagen in intact and fully hydrated bone samples, the other to develop synthetic mineral/collagen analogues.  Both supervisors will be involved in both strands, with input from the industrial partner.

The composition of bone samples and synthetic mineral/collagen composites will be measured by techniques we have already established in Aberdeen, including TGA, FTIR & Raman.

Measurement of the packing in bone will be carried out using diffraction methods; we have established a sound methodology and protocol for neutron scattering of collagen in whole bone samples at ILL, Grenoble.  Another comparison will be provided by the synthetic mineral:collagen composites, with results from the former informing the development of the latter.

The student will be expected to spend time at the industrial partner (Devro Medical, Glasgow).  You must have a good degree in Physics or a related Physical Science, as you will be expected to enrol on the SUPA Graduate School programme (see www.supa.ac.uk).  An interest in materials and biology is essential, as is willingness to handle biological tissues (human and animal).
