Ph.D. position in Wood Chemistry: KTH is the largest technical university in Sweden. Education and research cover a broad spectrum within natural sciences and engineering, as well as architecture, industrial engineering and management, urban planning, work science and environmental engineering. There are circa 12,000 full-year undergraduate students, 1,400 postgraduate students and 3,100 employees.

The School of Chemical Science and Engineering includes the areas Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Fibre and Polymer technology. It encompasses both fundamental and applied chemical sciences and seeks sustainable development through scientific excellence. Many research activities are interdisciplinary across the borders from chemistry to materials science, environmental science, biochemistry, biology and medicine. The School offers Bachelor and Master programs in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering and three international Master programs specializing in Biomedical materials, Chemical science and engineering and Pharmaceutical engineering.

Our work includes the areas Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Fibre and Polymer technology. We focus on the principles for design, analysis and understanding of molecular systems plus their application on, for example, bioorganic materials, energy transformation processes, the environment and production of chemicals and pharmaceuticals. KTH Chemical Science and Engineering are one of the most active in research among technical faculties in Sweden and we are in the frontline within our areas.

The PROBARK project focuses on separation and conversion of softwood bark components into valuable green chemicals and materials products. The topics for the PhD thesis include 1) development of suitable fractionation and pretreatment methods for selected softwood bark components, and understanding the chemistry of the components 2) exploiting the bark extractives as bioactive specialty chemicals. The project is an European Wood Wisdom ERA-NET project where the Swedish part is financed by VINNOVA and industrial partners Södra, Stora Enso and Processum.

Research results will be disseminated through scientific publications and international conferences.

Qualifications

The candidate should hold the degree of Master of Science in Chemical Engineering or other similar university degree. Qualifications in organic chemistry, microbiology and analytical chemistry are requested.

Employment

The position is intended for pursuing individual doctoral studies. The position will include
80 % research and 20 % teaching assistance.
