PhD position Institute of Chemistry and Dynamics of the Geosphere Germany

D061/2008: Transport and transport modelling of veterinary medicines in soils

For our Institute of Chemistry and Dynamics of the Geosphere - Agrosphere (ICG-4) we are seeking a

PhD Fellow
for a three-year PhD project
which is a continuation of the DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) research group “Veterinary Medicines in Soils: Basic Research for Risk Analysis, Subproject Transport of Veterinary Medicines from Soils to Groundwater”.

Tasks:

The candidate will study the fate of antibiotic substances after repeated applications of pig slurry and of 14C-labelled metabolites in soil column experiments from two agricultural soils. Batch studies will be performed to study sorption hysteresis for the different soil horizons. These experiments will be analysed with mathematical models that predict the fate and transport of antibiotics. Results of the laboratory experiments are used to validate the measured leaching behaviour of 14C-labelled sulfadiazine in outdoor lysimeters experiments.

Requirements: A recently completed diploma or masters thesis in a relevant field (soil science, geoecology, agricultural or natural sciences) with an overall grade of at least good; some experience in numerical modelling would be an advantage; a well-developed ability to work in a team with international colleagues; ability to work independently.

For more information on the Agrosphere visit our website: http://www.fz-juelich.de/icg/icg-4/index.php?index=3 or contact Dr. Roy Kasteel (r.kasteel@fz-juelich.de) or Dr. Joost Groeneweg (j.groeneweg@fz-juelich.de).

Payment will correspond to salary grade 13/2 of the Collective Agreement for the Civil Service (TVöD). Depending on the candidate’s profile and the subject of his/her PhD thesis, an additional allowance may be granted.
