Dynamics of proteins by electron paramagnetic resonance (f/m)
vacancy number: 8-053
Research
Proteins are unique machines that convert molecules or generate force. Understanding how they work requires to determine their structure and to detect their motion during function. By Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) structure is accessible via the dipole-dipole interaction of electron and/or nuclear spins from tenths of nanometers to several nanometers. Motion can be measured from nano-seconds to milliseconds. To develop and apply suitable methods to investigate the molecular mechanism of proteins is the aim of the project.
Job description
Developing and improving EPR methods to determine distances and dynamics of biological samples. Application of these techniques to understand protein function on a molecular level. The project is an interdisciplinary biophysics project, with subjects ranging from instrumental development in EPR to the biochemical aspects of protein manipulation.
Location
The project is carried out in the MoNOS (Molecular Nano-Optics and Spins) group at the Leiden Institute of Physics, Leiden University
Requirements
Candidates should have a
* strong interest in biophysics and be motivated to work on an interdisciplinary project.
* background in biophysics, molecular spectroscopy and measurement techniques (Experience in EPR is welcome, but is not required per se.)
* Hands-on experience in spectroscopy, physical chemistry or experimental physics is absolutely required.
