PhD position – mathematical modeling of the brain, specifically selection of behavior
Project
PhD position in computational neuroscience, specifically behavior selection
The School of Computer Science and Communication (CSC) at KTH hereby announces one PhD position in computational neuroscience for a project exploring the mechanisms underlying selection and initation of behaviors in vertebrates. CSC is one of the leading research- and teaching departments within information technology. Besides computational biology CSC is active within computer science, scientific computing, media technology, human-computer interaction, speech, music and language at KTH and at Stockholm University. The computational biology group offers a strong research environment within computational neuroscience/neuroinformatics, biological physics and bioinformatics, see
The project is part of a European research collaboration that will investigate how the brain is able to select and initiate different behaviors. KTH is responsible for exploring how gating of cortical commands are accomplished by structures in the brain called the basal ganglia, which are critical for the selection of motor and cognitive actions. The methodological approach is a combination of biophysically detailed computational models and more abstract, higher systems level models. During the whole project ther will be an interaction with researchers at the Stockholm Brain Institute
Also, there is a natural connection to the other announced PhD project concerning neuromehanical modeling.
Qualifications
Applicants should have a solid background in mathematics, physics,
biochemistry or neuroscience (on a master level or equivalent), with computer science skills, cf
Documented interest in research like activities (e.g. demonstrated in the form of master thesis work) is of large importance.
KTH aims to employ a diversity of competences, and thus welcomes applicants who will add to the variety of the University, especially as concerns its gender structure.
Employment
This graduate student position extends over maximally five years, including 20% of departmental duties (e.g. teaching). The salary follows the directions provided by KTH.
The PhD student can be enrolled either at KTH or at Stockholm University. Starting date can be discussed.
Form of employment: Time limited
Start date: According to agreement
Application
The application should contain a letter in which the applicant motivates the choice of conducting PhD studies. A CV, copies of relevant exams, grades, master thesis work or publications, as well as contact information to three reference persons, should be provided. Also applications from students that are close to finishing a master level education will be evaluated.
