Defense mechanisms in Populus nigra as a response to invertebrate herbivory

This project will be part of an interdisciplinary study that aims to unravel the ecology of tree-herbivore interactions with the help of biochemical and molecular techniques. We want to investigate the mechanisms of chemical defense in Populus nigra in response to damage by insect herbivores. Populus nigra produces four major groups of metabolites that appear to be involved in defense: volatile terpenoids, green leaf volatiles, phenolic glycosides, and condensed tannins. These compounds occur either constitutively in P. nigra or are induced by damaging agents such as insect herbivores. In our group we are especially interested in the inducible plant defenses and we study them both on the phenotypic as well as on the genetic level. Furthermore, we are interested in possible molecular cross talk between the different defense metabolite pathways in Populus nigra.
Job description
We offer excellent working conditions by providing a well equipped laboratory with a high standard of analytical tools, a friendly environment with enthusiastic colleagues.
Requirements
We are seeking a highly motivated and independent PhD student trained in molecular biology and analytical chemistry, who also has a strong interest in the ecology of insect-plant interactions. The work will include a combination of field experiments (e.g. volatile collections, sampling insects and leaf material from trees) and molecular analyses in the lab. Skills in molecular biology (QRT PCR, Northern blot) are essential, and experience in experimental design and statistics are highly advantageous. A Diploma or MSc degree in Biology is required for this position.
Payment   according to standard Max Planck society guidelines for Ph.D. positions

Application
Please send an application (Word or pdf document) including a CV, letter of motivation and research interests as well the names and addresses of two referees by June 20, 2008.
Deadline for applications: June 20th, 2008.
