PhD position – Microfabricated Atomic Clock Vapor Cells

For the Sensor, Actuators and Microsystems Laboratory of the IMT in Neuchâtel is looking for :

PhD position – Microfabricated Atomic Clock Vapor Cells

The Ph.D. project proposed consists in the microfabrication of vapor cells with superior performances for atomic clock applications. Different concepts will be evaluated and technologies developed to improve the operation and reliability of microfabricated vapor cells containing rubidium. Different materials and fabrication techniques will be evaluated. The influence of the cell design, chamber material, cell gaseous environment, and sealing techniques, on the performance of the vapors cells will be investigated and will lead to its optimization. A higher integration of the vapor cells with surrounding components (light sources, heating element) necessary for its operation will be considered based on microsystems technologies.

This project is funded by the Swiss National Fundation (SNF) in the frame of the Sinergia program. The work program will be carried out at the Sensors, Actuators and Microsystems Laboratory (SAMLAB) at the Institute of Microtechnology in Neuchâtel. Collaborative work will be performed with some of the other laboratories partners in the project, creating a stimulating scientific environment and a unique opportunity to work on a thematic of miniaturized atomic clocks in an inter-disciplinary project.

We are looking for a highly motivated and ambitious candidate with a high degree of autonomy and enthusiast to work in a multi-disciplinary environment. The candidate should exhibit a strong interest for experimental work related to the design, fabrication, assembly, and characterization of microfabricated devices. The main languages used for technical discussions in the lab are English and French. We are looking for a candidate with a background in physics, microsystems or atomic clock technologies.

The position is available starting 1st of March 2009.

If you feel attracted to work on a collaborative project within an interdisciplinary scientific environment please contact us or send your application (CV and cover letter) by email to:

Dr. Danick Briand, IMT-NE, +41 (0)32 720 5564, e-mail: danick.briand[at]unine.ch
