PhD position:
Nanoscale spin injection devices based on novel materials

Research
The use of novel materials like half-metallic ferromagnets and ferromagnetic semiconductors opens up new concepts for spin electronics. We will explore the use of these novel materials for devices based on spin-injection into semiconductors. Focus will be on oxide materials with 100 % spin polarization, oxidic ferromagnetic semiconductors, and magnetic insulators, using pulsed laser deposition for epitaxial growth. The emphasis is initially on exploring concepts and proof of principle experiments using ultrathin film nanostructures, but the step towards implementation into lateral nanostructures is to be done within the timeframe of the project for selected promising concepts. Special attention will be paid to the quality of the interfaces that play a crucial role for the spin injection. Interface quality will be investigated with a combination of nonlinear magneto-optics, small angle X-ray scattering and scanning probe Techniques.

Job description
This project, which is a part of Dutch NanoImpuls Spintronics network, suggests joint investigation by Nijmegen and Twente Universities. The part of Nijmegen will be the experimental study of the nanostructures with nonlinear magneto-optics and other techniques, as well as (time-resolved) optical spin injection experiments.

Location
The central theme of the interdisciplinary NSRIM research school is the relationship between the properties and structure of matter with an emphasis on matter with nanometer dimensions. This objective includes the creation of new molecular structures and materials with predefined, desired properties. Identification and investigation of possible applications of this fundamental knowledge is also part of the activities.

Requirements
We are looking for an enthusiastic physicist (M.Sc. or equivalent level) with affinity for experimental physics and an interest in ultrafast magnetic phenomena. Experience with (one of) the following experimental techniques is a plus: magnetic and magneto-optical measurements, scanning probe microscopy, UHV, ultrafast lasers

Conditions of employment
When fulfilling a PhD position at KUN, you will get the status of junior researcher. You will have an employee status and can participate in all the employee benefits KUN offers. You will get a contract for 4 years. During the first year the gross salary is approximately 1877 euro per month. This amount will increase to 2400 euro during the fourth year.
You are supposed to have a thesis finished at the end of your four year term. A training programme is part of the agreement. You and your supervisor will make up a plan for the additional education and supervising that you specifically need. This plan also defines which teaching activities you will be responsible (up to a maximum of 10% of your time).
