PhD Position Optimization of Networks Against Malicious Attacks,Switzerland
Job Description:Our society increasingly depends on complex systems, such as the Internet, traffic, electrical power grids, social networks, ecological networks, etc. Complex networks are used to model these systems. Robustness of networks against targeted attacks is of special interest for example to epidemiologists who want to break up disease transmission by targeted vaccinations, or to police forces when disrupting terrorist and other criminal networks.
The first aim of the project is to develop generally applicable methods for network optimization based on the connection between the network’s topology and its robustness to malicious attacks. Novel bioinspired optimization techniques will be used to accomplish this task. Efficient ways to immunize and protect benign networks should be found. Another goal of the project is development of efficient attack strategies with the focus on evolving schemes for criminal network disruption.
The project is funded by Swiss National Science Foundation and will be done in close collaboration with Prof. Marco Tomassini from the University of Lausanne.
Requirements:
Applicants should have a Diploma or Master degree in physics or related area, strong programming skills and interest in numerical simulations and interdisciplinary topics.
