You will investigate how electrons are getting localized when transition metal oxides (manganites) transform from a metal to an insulator, and how this relates to the occurrence of a proposed electrical polarization. Your work will directly aim on the interplay of orbitals, magnetic moments, electron localizations and the crystal structure. This work may have impact on the understanding of colossal-magneto resistance, superconductivity, multiferroicity and other interesting phenomena in perovskite related materials.
To study these effects you will perform x-ray experiments (resonant and non-resonant diffraction as well as absorption) as a member of a small team. Experiments will be performed at the SLS with unique experimental equipment and at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble.

Your profile

You have a master in physics and enjoy working in an interdisciplinary, internationally oriented environment and you can easily integrate in a small team. A good command of English is required.

You will be registered as a PhD student at the ETH Zurich. The working place is PSI, Villigen.

Dear sir.
I completed my MSc (Physics) with 56%. I want to know about the schlorhips for PhD programme in abroad. As i already enroll in India for PhD programme so i would like to know if there is any schlorships available for doing part of research work outside india.

You can apply for reserach exchange program in Germany. Please check DAAD website for that.

Hi Chandrasekaran,
There are many International PhD Programs in Germany. or many positions doesn’t have strict funding restrictions. You can either contact faculties for the available positions in their lab.. or apply for international programs..

In Germany, the Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy), is a rather high academic title. It is pursued following the successful completion of a Master’s degree (or an equivalent academic degree) at an internationally recognised university, and it is often considered a prerequisite for an academic career. The main focus in doctoral studies is placed on research, culminating in the writing of a Ph.D. thesis. In Germany, there are different ways of obtaining a doctoral degree:

Earning a Ph.D. at a Graduate College or School
Earning a Ph.D. through individual research
Obtaining a Ph.D. through an International Ph.D. Programme
