PhD Position Secure Middleware for Highly Volatile Environments, France
Job Description: The phenomenal growth of various networking devices ranging from sensors to mobile devices combined with the advances in wireless networking technologies such as Bluetooth and WiFi are promoting the deployment of a worldwide Internet of Things. All objects that embed short-range mobile transceivers are able to interact directly with local neighbours. In this context, the Internet can be viewed as a backbone network that interconnects a huge collection of small separate networks, each regrouping objects according to both their neighborhood relationship and physical properties (like for instance their wired or wireless transceiver characteristics). Examples of such separate networks include sensor networks, vehicular networks, opportunistic networks, MANETs, and internal networks of corporations, etc. These networks rely on different technologies, and their interconnection, to form a large-scale distributed network of objects, is challenging. The Internet of Things has many societal bene?ts that stimulate the creation of entirely new innovative services. Supporting such kind of new applications introduces new challenges concerning the communication paradigms to both provide meaningful cross-domain interactions and disseminate information over a worldwide Internet of Things.
Objectives
The goal of this PhD is to propose an approach to address the problem of supporting efficient, scalable and secure communication and service provision in highly volatile environments such as opportunistic/discruption/delay tolerant networks as encountered in the Internet of Things. The research work aims at investigating and proposing a middleware platform capable of managing configuring, coordinating, and managing a large number of devices anytime/anywhere irrespectively of their underlying characteristics and in an efficient and secure way. Potential application scenarios should be also considered.
