PhD Position, Department of Agricultural Engineering, University of Aarhus in Denmark

PhD in Modelling and Reduction of emissions from naturally ventilated livestock buildings
Institut for Jordbrugsteknik

The University of Aarhus, the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, invites applications for a 3-year PhD- position starting as soon as possible. The vacancy is at the Department of Agricultural Engineering.

Research area
The PhD-study is related to a research project with the objective to create fundamental knowledge to reduce emissions from naturally ventilated livestock buildings. Natural ventilation has advantages of being energy saving and of low noise. However, it is often associated with higher ventilation rates during windy weather and it is further inherently less controllable than mechanical ventilation. Emission issues including odour, gas and particles from a naturally ventilated livestock building are more complex than those of a mechanically ventilated building. In naturally ventilated buildings, ventilation opening areas and positions, temperature differences between indoor and outdoor, wind velocity and direction relative to the building geometry are important factors influencing the internal aerial environment, thus affecting the system design and control. A concept of partial pit ventilation with an exhaust air cleaning system could improve indoor air quality and reduce the emission. To design and control such a system, the crucial research work is to model the airflow in both room and pit channel. Therefore, this project will focus on the fundamental knowledge for modelling a naturally ventilated livestock production building with details of effects by ventilation configuration, thermal buoyancy and wind condition, combined with laboratory, scale model, wind tunnel experiments and numerical simulations.
