PhD Position available at the University of Washington
PhD position available at University of Washington:Anisotropy, Abrupt Climate Change, and the Deep Ice in West Antarctica.A collaborative project between the University of Washington and Portland State University will study the link among large-scale ice flow, crystal fabric, and climate history for West Antarctic ice cores. The project is seeking a PhD student who will be based at the University of Washington. This project has two overarching goals. First, to constrain the accumulation rate, thickness, and temperature history for Siple Dome using a vertical velocity profile that includes the effects of an evolving fabric on deformation through time. And second, to infer the surface temperature and accumulation rate changes in the past, focusing on the apparent abrupt climate change events at 22ka and 15ka, by using ice-flow models and the depth profile of fabric determined from sonic velocity measurements and grain size observed in thin sections in Siple Dome. The PhD student will focus on the processes by which changes in climate at the surface of an ice sheet affect the development of crystal fabric through the firn. The results of this firn study will link to a coupled fabric-evolution ice-flow model for the deep ice. This NSF-funded project will provide 3 years (36 months) of RA support. The ESS Department commits to 5 years of RA or TA support through the 9-month school year for PhD students who are making satisfactory progress.Applicants should apply through the University of Washington Earth and Space Sciences Department (Preference will be given to applications received by December 15): http://www.ess.washington.edu/web/ess/graduate/admissionsFor more information, please contact Ed Waddington at University of Washington (edw@ess.washington.edu) or Erin Pettit at Portland State University (epettit@pdx.edu).
