PhD project in “The Effect of cycling policies”,Technical University of Denmark
DTU Transport would like to invite applications for a 3-year PhD position starting in autumn 2010 or according to further agreement. The project is financed by the Road Directorate, DTU Transport, and DTU.
Biking is an important means for improving the health of people, to reduce air pollution and to reduce congestion in urban areas. However, we do not know enough about the factors that induce people to choose bike over other modes. The project will thus develop our knowledge about the modal split between bicycle and other transport modes like car, walking and public transport.
The PhD project will focus on
- Further development of a model on mode share on short travel distances, which has been established as part of a former project for the Road Directorate. A possible development could be with a route choice model or a model for transport generation for bicycle traffic
- Outline directions for data collection about policy instruments which shows up to be of importance for the development in transport kilometres by bike, for instance cycle lanes, road networks and road conditions
- Analyse the effect of different policy instruments on mode choice and develop guide lines for the municipalities in their work with improving the conditions for biking
Requirements
Candidates must have a master degree in Transport Planning, Operation Research, or equivalent academic qualifications. Furthermore, skills and interest in transport modelling and policy analysis are necessary, and a good overview of data collection methodologies will be an advantage.
In addition a good command of the English language is necessary.
Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled at the DTU Transport PhD school. The candidate will be part of the Transport Economics Group at DTU Transport. The Transport Economics Group comprises 13 researchers including economists, engineers, and political scientists and currently three PhD students.

The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current Danish rules for PhD degree students.
