Description : A PhD Research Assistantship position in Robotics and Mechatronics Design will be available to start in January 2010 in the Measurement and Control Engineering Research Center (MCERC), College of Engineering, Idaho State University (ISU), Pocatello, Idaho, USA. The PhD student will join a team whose research is centered on developing a novel Smart Hand Prosthesis. Topics of the project include signal processing, estimation theory, system identification, robotics, embedded systems and intelligent control, bio-signaling and bio-sensing, image processing, sensor design and related topics. The student’s area of research will be the on the mechanical design of the robotic hand from a biomechatronics point of view. Applicants for the PhD research assistantship position should have a Master’s degree in Biomedical, Electrical, Mechanical engineering or similar discipline, with strong credentials. Background on robotics, mechanical design, and the use of design tools such as CAD, FEA, etc., will be also considered during the selection process. The Research Assistantship covers tuition and fees, medical insurance and a monthly stipend.

I am a qualified Mechanical Fitter/Technician who has undergone apprenticeship training at Carlsberg Malawi Brewery Ltd for three years from Lilongwe Technical College.
From January1999 up to November 2001 I was a trainee Mechanical Fitter at Carlsberg Malawi Brewery Ltd a Company from Denmark and January 2002 up to February 2006 I was an employee at the same Company working as a Maintenance Technician. A Company which has a high speed air controlled, pneumatic, hydraulic and computerized Machines which runs 48000 bottles per hour. My employer’s overriding objectives were to ensure that the overall production efficiency must be within the approved target. Hence my responsibilities included maintenance of machines, training other Technicians, planning for overhaul, help in ordering of spares etc.
And from 1 March 2006 up to date I am an employee of ESCOM working as Mechanical & Electrical Fitter. My employer’s mission is to optimize the use of asset, develop the market potential and provide Electrical energy and related service to stake-holders’ satisfaction. Hence my responsibilities includes Maintenance of Transformers, clearing faults, fabricating things, Installation of Transformers, Breakers and any other Engineering duties assigned by my boss.
My practical experience, technical understanding of all relevant Engineering issues and my intention to develop and pursue a career in Engineering department should ensure my consideration for my further studies.
I sincerely trust that I have ably demonstrated my competence and complete suitability for the challenging course.
