The University of Agder invites applications for a full-time fixed-term appointment as PhD Research Fellow in Nordic linguistics for a period of three years at the Department of Nordic and Media Studies, Faculty of Humanities and Education. The position is located in Kristiansand Norway. As a prerequisite for appointment, the applicant must be qualified and apply for admission to the faculty’s PhD programme in linguistics.

The position is affiliated with the project Ny norsk språkhistorie, led by Professor Ernst Håkon Jahr, University of Agder, and Professor Helge Sandøy, University of Bergen. The project is carried out in collaboration with scholars from several Norwegian universities and colleges. A four-volume, 2,000 page book is being planned for publication in relation with the project.

The PhD Research Fellow in Nordic linguistics will work on the development of “talt riksmål” in Norway, i.e. the oral language which developed among civil servants and the upper classes as a result of language contact between written Danish and spoken Norwegian during the 18th century.

Applicants must hold a master’s degree in Nordic linguistics or equivalent. Applicants must submit a project proposal whose scope lies within the abovementioned areas of priority. Applicants should also give a description of their interest and experience in the subject area. The project proposal should comprise a maximum of ten pages in length, including the reference list. The proposal must contain a preliminary presentation of the problematic approach, theoretical foundation, methodical approach and planned progression for the doctoral project.

The position requires that the applicant is able to work in a goal-oriented, organised, concentrated and independent manner. Applicants will be assessed on the basis of their awarded examination marks as well as any previous research and development work and published work. Relevant practical experience, personal suitability and good teamwork skills will also be emphasised.

Appointment is made by the University of Agder’s Appointments Committee for Teaching and Research Position. The successful applicant will have rights and obligations in accordance with the current regulations for the Civil Service.

The position is remunerated according to the State salary scale, salary plan 17.515, code 1017, salary grade 45. A 2 % compulsory pension contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund is deducted from the pay according to current statutory provisions.
