PhD Research Fellowship Norwegian University of Science and Technology

February 26, 2008

The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Department of Chemical Engineering, invites applicants for a PhD research fellowship in the area of design of natural gas conversion processes. The project is funded by the Research Council of Norway on the GASSMAKS-program.

The main objective of the project is to improve design and operation of selected processes for natural gas conversion with respect to profitability, safety and environmental loads. Process technologies for syngas production integrated with methanol or Fischer-Tropsch syntheses are of particular interest. In addition, polyolefin process technologies, methanol-to-olefins and synthesis of dimethyl ether are also of interest.

Modelling of selected processes will be an important part of the project and to apply models in a systematic way to improve process design and operation. The model formulation will be a central part of the work in addition to the further development of a methodology for systematic design of the chemical conversion processes. This will be applied along with established methods such as process integration and simulation. Use of commercial simulators and tools for process integration will also be part of the project work. Background or interests in process modelling, chemical reaction engineering, mathamatical programming, numerical mathematics are essential.

Applicants should be theoretically strong and have a MSc degree in chemical engineering or related fields.

For further information about the position, please contact Professor Magne Hillestad (magne.hillestad@chemeng.ntnu.no), Tel: +47 73594122.

PhD research fellowships are awarded for a total of 3 or 3 years and 9 months. Fellowships for 3 years an 9 monts include 20 % of teaching duties at bachelor’s and master’s degree level. These duties are commonly distributed over the 3,9 years, with a larger proportion during the two first years.

PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, in the State salary scale 43-47, gross NOK 325.600 to NOK 348.900 per annum (before tax). PhD candidates normally start at wage level 43. There will be a 2 % deduction to The Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The appointment of the PhD fellow will be made according to Norwegian guidelines for universities and university colleges and to the general regulations regarding university employees. Applicants for a PhD position are obliged to engage on an organized research programme, and appointment requires approval of the applicant’s plan for PhD study.

NTNU’s PhD-rules require a master degree or equivalent with at least 5 years of studies and an average grade of A or B within a scale of A-E for passing grades (A best). Candidates from universities outside Norway are kindly requested to send a Diploma Supplement or a similar document, which describes in detail the study and grade system and the rights for further studies associated with the obtained degree: http://ec.europa.eu/education/policies/rec_qual/recognition/diploma_en.html

NTNU’s objective is to increase the number of females in scientific positions. Female applicants are therefore encouraged to apply.

All applicants must be able to communicate fluently in English (in speaking and writing) and must indicate their level of language skills.

An application with a CV, certified copies of transcripts and reference letters to be submitted electronically through http://www.jobbnorge.no/, with the reference number NT-12/08.

Preferably, we want the attachments in one file. Application deadline: 14.03.2008
