2 positions as PhD Research Fellow are available at the Department of Chemistry, University of Oslo. The PhD fellowships are for a period of 3 years, comprising at least 1.5 years research stay with industrial partner Haldor Topsoe A/S, located in Lyngby near Copenhagen, Denmark. The positions are funded as a European Industrial Doctorates project (FP7 ITN-EID), part of the Marie Curie actions. The desired starting date is January 6th, 2014. Eligibility: •At least 1.5 years of the total 3 years is required to be spent with industrial partner Haldor Topsøe A/S.
•Due to the requirements of the ITN-EID program, at the time of employment at UiO, candidates must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc) in Norway for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the reference date. Compulsory national service and/or short stays such as holidays are not taken into account.

-PhD Research Fellow 1: Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in chemistry or chemical engineering.
-The candidate should have experience in one or more of the following areas: Synthesis of catalysts and functional materials, preferably porous materials such as zeolites; characterization of such solids and their surfaces by spectroscopic techniques, in particular Raman, FT-IR, and UV-Vis spectroscopy;
-Studies of catalytic reactions facilitated by porous catalysts and/or reaction mechanisms of heterogeneously catalyzed reactions.
-PhD Research Fellow 2: Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in chemistry, physics, or chemical engineering. The candidate will perform quantum chemical and/or molecular mechanical modelling of solid, porous materials such as zeolite catalysts.
-Investigations of fundamental material properties as well as catalytic reactions occurring on the catalyst surface are both relevant.
-The candidate will perform periodic calculations and/or employ extended cluster methods using state of the art computational codes running on the national computing facilities.

Scholarship Description: The fellowships are based on the Catalysis Research Group and associated with the Center for Materials Science and Nanotechnology (SMN) and the Innovative Natural Gas Processes and Products (inGAP) center for research based innovation, established by the Research Council of Norway. The vision of SMN is to contribute to the increase of Norway’s production through research on materials science and nanotechnology on functional materials, and ensure a level of quality that ensures the recognition of SMN as a leading center amongst the Nordic countries, as well as internationally, within selected fields. The objective of inGAP is value creation in natural gas processes through rational design of processes and products based on atomistic and mechanistic insight in catalyst and reactor parameters under operative conditions.
Employment at in GAP center will allow the successful candidate the opportunity to work in a highly cross-disciplinary field in an internationally competitive research group with a high degree of international collaboration. The positions are elements in on-going, larger efforts related to the energy challenges of the late and post fossil fuels society. More specifically, the projects are related to the synthesis and characterization of nanostructured microporous solid catalysts such as zeolites and spectroscopic and mechanistic investigations of acid catalyzed heterogeneous catalytic processes facilitated by such materials. Research in the Catalysis Research Group comprises extensive international collaboration, and research visits to partners in Europe is an integrated part of PhD training and research activities.
