PhD Research Position, Wessex Institute of Technology
May 4, 2009Wessex Institute of Technology, PhD Research Position
Modelling of Acoustic Waves and Bubble Dynamics
Applications are invited, from suitably qualified applicants, to work in the field of Modelling of Acoustic Waves and Bubble Dynamics. The position is funded by a major new project including 17 participating institutions from the EU, as part of the Nanotechnology call of the FP7 European Commission Programme. The project will start during the summer 2009.
The main objective of the project is up-scaling of a pilot line for the production of medical antibacterial textiles by inserting nanoparticles.
The selected candidate will participate in modeling of wave propagation taking into account interactions between ultrasound waves and bubble clouds. A model including bubble formation and collapse will be developed. The boundary element method (BEM) will be used to model multiple bubble dynamics including chemical reactions and mass transfer across the bubble surface due to non-equilibrium evaporation and condensation at the fluid-gas interface.
The candidate is expected to hold a good first degree in Engineering, Mathematics or Physical Sciences. It would be beneficial if the applicant has experience in numerical modelling of waves or fluid flow. Previous experience in programming is desirable. The successful candidate will be registered for a PhD degree and will have a stipend covering the living expenses and fees. The position is for three years.
Applications including your CV, cover letter and contact details of three referees, should be sent, preferably by Email, to: Prof. Viktor Popov, Wessex Institute of Technology, Ashurst Lodge, Ashurst, Southampton, SO40 7AA, UK, E-mail: viktor-at-wessex.ac.uk.
Closing date: 19 June 2009.

Summary of the M.Sc. Thesis
The major objective of my master research is aims at development of innovative multifinishing system for preparation of new cotton products that can be used for various purposes particularly in the field of medical textiles. The innovation is based on systematic investigation involving synthesis of water soluble finishing agent with multifunctional purpose. This agent is used for treatment of cotton fabric as per the conventional pad-dry- cure method. The so treated cotton fabric is tailored into surgical gowns whose physiological responses and antimicrobial performance properties are examined.
More strictly, the synthesis, characterization and application of water soluble chitosan-O-PEG as well as chitosan-N-PEG graft copolymers are undertaken. With the former copolymer, the synthesis is carried out by reacting N-phthaloyl chitosan with polyethylene glycol monomethyl ether iodide (MPEGI) in the presence of silver oxide. Phthaloyl chitosan is prepared by reacting phthalic anhydride with chitosan to protect its amino groups during copolymerization.
Chitosan-N-PEG copolymer, on the other hand, is synthesized by reaction of chitosan with MPEG aldehyde. The latter is prepared by chemical oxidation of MPEG with dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO) and acetic anhydride.
Thorough investigation into factors affecting the synthesis of the aforementioned copolymers along with complete examination of their structure using sophisticated tools such as IR, 1H-NMR, TGA, X-ray, and chemical analysis.
Multifinishing of cotton fabric is achieved through treatment with either of the said copolymers along with citric acid (crosslinking agent) and sodium hypophosphite (catalyst). Properties and performance of these fabrics upgrade them to medical textiles such as surgical gowns and drapes. By and large current results conclude that the use of chitosan-O-PEG graft as well as chitosan-N-PEG graft copolymers represent a novel route for production of medical textiles especially those employed in surgical gowns and drapes.
Areas of Competence and Motivation for Science
The major motivations for science included:
•Chemical modification of polysaccharides such as chitosan, cellulose
•Surface modification of textiles using nanotechnolgy.
•Preparation of hyperbranched polymers and its application for medical purposes.
•Preparation of dendrimers such as polyamidoamine, polypropylene imine, polyethylene imine.
•Regioselective of polysacharides such as chitosan, and oligosaccharides such as mannopyrannosides.
•Chemical modifiction of dendrimers by different oligo-saccharides such as mono and di, and chemical modification of the surface of glycodendrimers by DOTA, NTA to used as ligands to some metals such as Cu,Ni,Ag,Gd,Au.
•Supramolecular components such as cyclodextrins, dendrimers, and calixarenes.
•Chemical modifiction of dendrimers by oligosaccharides, and chemical modification of the surface of glycodendrimers by DOTA, NTA to used as ligands to some metals such as Cu,Ni,Ag,Gd,Au.
•Preparation of novel core-shell compenents based on natural, synthetics polymer with with metal nanoparticles.
•Preperation of functional polymeric materials loading with different metals nanoparticles.
•Functionalisation of Textiles with Nanotechnology.
•I have some experience in some instromenation such as FT-IR,H-NMR,HPLC,UV/VIS spectroscopy, TEM.
