PhD Research Scholarships for Southern African Development Community in South Africa

The Health Economic and HIV/AIDS Research Division (HEARD), in partnership with the School of Development Studies (SDS) at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, is offering PhD Research Scholarships in the social and economic aspects of HIV/AIDS, beginning 2009. 

Each grant will be for R270 000 and will be paid in tranches over three years, depending on satisfactory progress. Successful candidates will be based in the SDS in Durban, for the duration of the grant, with the exception of the time during which they may be undertaking field research elsewhere on the continent. 

Applicants must 

Be citizens of a Southern African Development Community country 
Have a good Masters Degree (i.e. a first or upper second class pass or its equivalent) 
Have a demonstrable research experience 
Undertake to register for a PhD dissertation at the University of KwaZulu-Natal on a topic related to the social and economic effects of HIV/AIDS 
Meet the requirements for PhD students registered in the SDS at the University of KwaZulu-Natal 
Make a commitment to remain on the African continent for at least two years after graduation 
Applications should consist of 

A letter of motivation including names of possible supervisors at the University of KwaZulu-Natal 
A one to two page summary of the proposed research 
Full CV 
Full academic records 
Academic letters of reference (ideally two)
