LONG TERM CONSEQUENCES OF RSI – PhD Scholarship

Job Description:

The National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health (NCEPH) is an interdisciplinary centre at ANU. Students at NCEPH undertake research on a variety of important social, health and disease issues related to population health. They also have the opportunity to participate in multi-disciplinary groups and large research projects that may involve extensive national and international collaboration.

A scholarship is available to analyse a large data set based on a 20-year follow-up of a group of women office workers, many of whom developed work-related neck and upper limb disorders between 1980 and 1984. The data cover general health, neck and upper body disorders, well-being, social environment and a broad range of demographic and general questions.

In the early 1980s Australia experienced an epidemic of office-work-related neck and upper limb disorders, known as repetition strain injuries or RSI. This was associated with the introduction of computers into offices. The evidence suggests that changes in work organisation more than ergonomic factors or personal attributes were the causes. Many of those affected developed severe problems, left work on disability grounds and also found their home and recreational life severely impacted. The ground-breaking study to be analysed is the only long-term follow-up of women with this disorder nationally or internationally.
