PhD Scholarship Award in the Neuroscience of Ageing
October 21, 2008PhD Scholarship Award in the Neuroscience of Ageing, University of Birmingham School of Sport & Exercise Sciences:
Dr Mark Hollands invites applications for a PhD Scholarship Award that will investigate ‘Age-related changes in the sensory control of gait and posture’.
The aim of this project will be to study and compare movement characteristics of young and older participants as they perform various everyday functional tasks e.g. stair climbing, obstacle stepping and turning around. The PhD will involve analysis of kinetic, kinematic and eye movement data. Comparisons of data collected from young and older adults performing both real and “virtual” walking tasks will provide useful insight into the sensory control of walking and how it is affected by the ageing process and potentially lead to the development of a safe and innovative experimental paradigm for identifying suboptimal visual sampling strategies in older adults and patient groups characterized as being at a high risk of falling. More specific details about the project can be found on our WebPages (http://www.sportex.bham.ac.uk/postgrad/prospective), or you can discuss the project further by writing to Dr Mark Hollands (email: M.Hollands@bham.ac.uk).
Applicants require a good Honours degree (at least 2.1 or equivalent) in an appropriate subject for the project, an acceptable English qualification (e.g., GCSE, IELTS etc.) and must be a citizen of the European Union (due to funding limitations / constraints). Applications to the School of Sport and Exercise Sciences, College of Life and Environmental Sciences, University of Birmingham, should be completed on-line at: http://www.apply.bham.ac.uk/cp/home/loginf. The closing date for applications is the 1st December 2008. Candidates should be able to start in January 2009.
General enquiries should be directed to Dr. M. Edwards, Postgraduate Admissions Tutor (M.Edwards.1@Bham.ac.uk) or to Val Queeley, Admissions Secretary (tel: 0121 414 4115). Please visit our website for more details: http://www.sportex.bham.ac.uk
