PhD Scholarship in Architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Arts, Denmark: PhD Scholarship at the Institute for Planning: ‘The organisation, design and meaning of outdoor space in the planning of residential areas and residences’

The School of Architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Arts offers a PhD scholarship with focus on the organisation, design and meaning of outdoor space in the planning of residential areas and residences. The project will be implemented at the Center for Public Space Research and the Research Group for Residential Areas at the Institute of Planning of the School of Architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts that focuses on landscape, urban space, residential areas and homes, and planning and the environment. It is linked to the Centre for Housing and Welfare, Realdania Research/University of Copenhagen.

Subject
The organisation, design and meaning of outdoor space in the planning of residential areas and residences.

In the relationship between the outdoor spaces and the intimate sphere of residences in the site plan, questions are raised regarding the relationship between public and private, stability and flexibility, uniformity and individuality, programme and form. The concrete design of the exterior space of residential areas is a central aspect of the experience and evaluation of both the site plan, as well as the quality, value and functionality of the individual residence.

While the organisation of residential homes can to a higher extent be based on individual needs, the private sphere and specific life situations, common needs, public access and use, and a uniform architectural expression have traditionally been dealt with in the organisation and design of outdoor space at the scale of the site plan for residential areas. At the same time the total plan is expected to create the framework for, and answer to, individual needs and wishes. The outdoor space of building planning can therefore be described as both representative and experienced/lived space.

The relationship between the common the shared and social and the individual as expressed in the spatial organisation and in the distribution of programmes in the building plan has historically been weighted and expressed in different ways and implemented in different types of site plans. This aspect attracts special attention in relation to both new building types and the transformation of existing site plans.

The relation between the programme and the form of outdoor space is expected to express and handle other forms of flexibility and accessibility than the demands made by specific family, work and interior design situations can claim in relation to the planned flexibility and accessibility of the residence.

In addition, the concept of sustainability raises a number of questions related to different types of site plans, and to the location, functional content and detailing of outdoor space. The transformation of existing residential areas also seems to demand specific consideration in relation to the concept of sustainablity in both the plan and the details, as well as in overall perception and understanding.

The project should address the definition and interpretation of concepts, and the factors and qualities such as flexibility, stability, the common and the individual, accessibility and sustainability in relation to both new plan types and the transformation of existing site plans, and the organisation, design and meaning of outdoor space, as well as putting these issues into a perspective relating to the planning of residential areas.

It is expected that where, how and in which ways these concepts are defined, localised and manifested is examined through, among other methods, case studies, theoretical perspectivisation and reflection that also includes the relationship between design and the societal context in which it is found.

It is expected that an arguement for the project focus and choice of case studies is made within the application.

The PhD student will be associated with the Center for Public Space Research and the Research Group for Residential Areas at the School of Architecture.

This group will, together with the Doctoral School at the School of Architecture, be responsible for the guidance of the PhD student.
