PhD scholarship in CFD Modelling of non-neutral ABL conditions

Technical University of Denmark – The Wind Energy Division at Riso¸ DTU

3-year PhD scholarship is available at the wind energy division at Risø DTU.The Wind Energy Division at Risø DTU, Technical University of Denmark, is seeking a PhD fellow to work on the development and validation of a CFD approach to include thermal effects for assessment of wind conditions in complex terrain. This PhD position is associated with the Marie Curie Initial Training Programme, WAUDIT. As part of the WAUDIT project, the PhD student will be involved in an international network of young researchers, all working within the general field of wind resource assessment. Applicants for this Fellowship should not be Danish nationals or have lived in Denmark for more than 1 year out of the last 3 years.

Job Description

This PhD position is concerned with improving existing Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models for assessment of wind conditions in complex terrain by including the effect of thermal stability.  The diurnal cycle of heating and cooling of the ground surface strongly influences the wind in both flat and complex terrain but is mostly ignored in state-of-the-art CFD models for wind resource assessment. The main focus of the PhD students will be on including the thermal stability effects in the steady-state RANS (Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes) methodology. The wind industry is increasingly relying on CFD and the RANS approach will be the main approach for many years to come. The PhD employee will be able to work with unsteady LES (Large-Eddy Simulation) but mostly to validate the developed RANS approach. The in-house code (Risø DTU) EllipSys will be used. The EllipSys code is a finite volume discretization of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. Additionally, it is anticipated that PhD employee will be involved in analysis of a large scale field experiment located at a mountain site in India. The experiment is a joint effort between Vestas Technology R&D and Risø DTU and is well suited as validation case of the developed stratification model.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a master’s degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master’s degree in engineering. You are expected to have good written and oral communication skills in English. Previous experience of CFD, C/Fortran programming and project management would be considered an advantage. To qualify for the Fellowship, you must satisfy the requirements of a Marie Curie Early-Stage Researcher (ESR) and also the mobility requirements, both as defined in the Guide for Applicants (click on the Information Package bullet).

Approval and Enrolment

The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

Salary and appointment terms

As a Marie Curie Fellow you will receive a salary of approximately DKK 35000 per month including pension, mobility allowance and holiday pay.
