What makes us aware of our environment and our existence? More specifically, can consciousness be measured? Currently, the only way of discerning whether a person is consciously aware is by simply asking them. But what of coma or vegetative state patients who are unable to communicate?
Functional connectivity imaging based on blood-oxygenation-level-dependent (BOLD) MRI is a novel and completely non-invasive technique for investigating large-scale neural networks in the brain (Bullmore et al, 2009; Damoiseaux & Greicius, 2009; Salvador et al, 2005; Zhang & Raichle, 2010). Unlike in conventional functional MRI (fMRI), no external stimulation is required, which makes this technique particularly useful when investigating disorders of consciousness such as coma or vegetative state. Furthermore, functional connectivity imaging of the transition between consciousness and unconsciousness, for example during anaesthesia, can be expected to reveal new insights into the mechanisms that underpin consciousness.
The aim of this PhD project is twofold:
(i) to investigate functional brain network dynamics during anaesthesia and disorders of consciousness (eg coma, vegetative state);
(ii) to develop novel data analysis methods using concepts of complex systems theory and non-linear dynamics. The project makes excellent use of resources and key strengths at the University of Aberdeen that include our significant expertise in neuroimaging and MRI methods development.
Moreover, the project is supported by a multidisciplinary research team consisting of neuroscientists, neuroimaging experts, clinicians, physicists and mathematicians; amongst our team are our collaborators at the Institute for Complex Systems & Mathematical Biology.
