PhD Scholarship in Marine and Coastal Morphology: medium- and long term area modelling

A 3-year PhD scholarship is available at the Department of Mechanical Engineering from March 1th 2009.

Apply before: 12.12.2008 at 12:00 (noon)

Coastal and marine areas are of increasing importance. An ever increasing part of the World population is concentrated in the coastal zone within a distance of 50 km from the coastline. Offshore activities are of increasing importance because of exploration and production of hydrocarbons and construction of offshore wind turbine farms. Design conditions and safety are affected by climate change: rising water levels and change in storm conditions which among others cause increased erosion and morphological changes at coasts and large scale marine bed forms such as tidal banks used as location for wind farms.

The subject of the project is modelling to describe the long term evolution of large scale morphological forms in the marine or the coastal environment. Only environments with non-cosive sediments(sand) are to be considered. The analysis can consider the formation and evolution of the features dominated by waves and wave driven currents, as in the case of longshore bars, or by the combination of tidal flow and wave action, as in the case of tidal banks. The description of the morphology is to be process-based, using models for waves, flow and sediment transport.

The work should involve the use of existing model tools and development of new modelling concepts and models if required. Possibilities of combining conventional short- and longterm modelling concepts should be investigated to attempt to extend the effective simulation period, for example by prescribing the shape of the morphological unit and determining the evolution of its dimensions by filtering the results from a detailed model result accordingly.

The interaction of the morphological form and structures should be considered, for example by analysing the impact of  a wind turbine farm on tidal banks or coastal protection structures.

Candidates should have a master’s degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master’s degree in engineering.

The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. Information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies is included in the general rules of DTU, which may be obtained by application to the PhD programme office at tel: +45 4525 1176 or +45 4525 1177.

The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students.

Further information is available at the WWW-address http://www.mek.dtu.dk or by application to the Department of Mechanical Engineering, building 403, DTU, 2800 Lyngby, tel: 45251407, e-mail: jf@mek.dtu.dk.

Applications with enclosures in triplicate should be submitted to Jørgen Fredsøe at the address indicated above. Applications must include a curriculum vitae and documentation of a completed master’s degree.

The application must sent to MEK and be received no later than December 12th 2008 at 12.00.

All interested candidates irrespective of age, gender, race, religion or ethnic background are encouraged to apply.
