PhD Scholarship in Molecular Biology, National Veterinary Institute (DTU VET)

A three year PhD scholarship in Molecular Biology is available at the National Veterinary Institute (DTU VET) with starting date December 2008.
Apply before: 30.10.2008 at 12:00 (noon)

DTU VET is part of the Technical University of Denmark. The Institute conducts research, provides education and gives advice on infectious animal diseases in farm livestock and companion animals. Daily work will be performed at the Department of Poultry, Fish and Fur Animals located in Aarhus. Here, the Section for Fish Diseases focuses on viral diseases, vaccinology and immunology in fish.

Identification of virulence markers in VHS
The PhD scholar will contribute to the project “Identification of virulence markers in marine VHS virus and use in diagnostics for aquaculture” funded by The Danish Research Council for Technology and Production Sciences (FTP).

Production of rainbow trout in marine aquaculture is an expanding industry in Denmark, but a circulating reservoir of the fish pathogenic viral haemorrhagic septicaemia virus (VHSV) in wild fish populations represents an important threat towards the future success of these activities.

The primary task of the PhD scholar will be to determine the genetic background for virulence of VHSV isolates to rainbow trout. Various molecular tools will be applied such as reverse genetics for generation of recombinant virus, in vivo imaging and immunofluorescense for in situ pathogenesis studies as well as virulence testing in small scale animal experiments. The expected result will be improved understanding of pathogen virulence and identification of genetic markers for virulence of VHSV isolates in rainbow trout. The obtained results will be used for development of a diagnostic tool for rapid virulence-typing of VHSV isolates.

Preferred qualifications
• good experience in practical research
• a master’s degree (M.Sc.) in biology or a similar degree
• ability to work with animal experiments
• ability to design and perform research work plans on an individual basis as well as a team-member
• good routine in English, speaking, reading and writing

The application must contain
• Curriculum vitae (incl. the applicants email address)
• List of publications, if available
• Transcript of university examinations
• Contact details of 2 persons for references

The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. Information about the requirements for enrolment and the planning of the scholarship studies is included in the general rules of DTU, se more on: http://www.dtu.dk/English/education/Phd_Education.aspx

Applications will be evaluated by an assessment committee. The main criterion for selection will be the potential of the applicant as researcher. In addition experience with molecular biology, virology and/or immunology will be an advantage.

The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students.

Further information is available from senior scientist Katja Einer-Jensen +45 7234 6874 or senior scientist Niels Lorenzen +45 7234 6829.
