PhD scholarship in strategy with a focus on competition and accountability in seaborne shipping

The Centre for Shipping Economics and Innovation (CENSEI) at the Department of Innovation and Organizational Economics (INO) and the Department of Management, Politics and Philosophy (MPP) invites applications for a vacant PhD scholarship in ”Competition and Accountability in the Seaborne Shipping Industry”.

New challenges arising as a result of increasing globalization and a stronger general concern for the impact of sea transports on communities and the environment are prompting shipping companies to reassess and change their community position and accountability. The seaborne shipping industry faces major challenges in terms of pollution and relevant issues in relation to safety at sea and ashore. The question is how these challenges may be translated into concrete requirements for the shipping companies to comply with and how the shipping industry can develop the new skills and competencies necessary to handle these challenges in a long-term strategic perspective.

The project can be carried out at the PhD school of either one of the departments, depending on the relevance to the project (INO is part of the PhD School in Economics and Business Administration and MPP is part of the Doctoral School on Knowledge and Management).

The scholarship is co-funded by DS-Norden and CBS.

As a distinctive research entity at CBS the Centre for Shipping Economics and Innovation focuses broadly on the relationship between shipping industry dynamics and globalization. Within this broad field, the centre carries out research resting on a combination of ”shipping economics” and the ”economics of innovation”, the latter as applied to shipping and related industries. ”Shipping economics” refers broadly to economic and comparative-institutional analysis of the functioning and underlying mechanisms of the shipping industry as well as of the internal organization and boundaries of the shipping firm. Thus defined, shipping economics includes (but is not limited to) the study of the industrial organization of shipping; the dynamics of shipping markets; the socio-economic principles of seaborne trade; the global division of labour in seaborne trade; maritime clusters; maritime regulation and policy; the micro-economics of firm decision-making; as well as the strategy, structure and boundaries of the shipping firm. ”Economics of innovation” refers to issues related to innovation and the replication of new products, processes, technologies and organizational forms.

We strongly encourage applicants to focus research design, methodology and theory choice within the core area of the center, as described above.

Closing date: April 1, 2009 at 12.00 noon.
