Project Descriptrion:

The yaw bearing, in most turbine designs, is a costly double race ball bearing that is able to absorb both radial and axial forces and a significant bending moment. The development of ever larger wind turbines means that the threshold for the use of rolling element bearings as the seating of the nacelle is approaching and that a technology shift may be necessary in the future.

Background
Possible alternatives to the classic yaw roller bearings, include oil-lubricated hydrodynamic or hydrostatic bearings and grease lubricated plain bearings with metallic or polymer sliding surfaces.

Brake technology in the wind turbine industry is getting increased focus. In the yaw system application, the tribological conditions in the brake are in many ways comparable to those present in metal forming processes (insignificant speeds, low transient temperatures and surface pressures comparable to the yield strength of the materials involved).

The two components (bearings and brakes) may be matched in future designs. The phenomenon of brake bedding-in relates to contradicting requirements when looking at surface contact. To reduce wear, lubricants with EP additives are normally used, but these additives will on the other hand form a surface layer on the bearing (or brake) parts so that the coefficient of friction will be lowered.

In existing wind turbines the yaw motion is typically achieved with gear motors with an added external open pinion and gear contact. A number of special propulsion technologies have been developed for small scale systems, such as harmonic gears, peristaltic systems and piezoelectric motors. So far none of these technologies have been applied to large scale structures. In the Yaw Drive Unit project the ambition is to investigate for novel propulsion technologies.

Qualifications
Candidates should have a master’s degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master’s degree in engineering. Candidates with prior knowledge in machine elements, tribology and experimental work are preferred.

Salary and appointment terms
The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students. The period of employment is 3 years with start as soon as possible after the enrolment.
