PhD Scholarship
The impact of employee information & consultation regulations on the island of Ireland
Centre for Innovation and Structural Change (CISC)

Applications are invited from students interested in studying for PhD in the area of Employment Relations and Human Resource Management. The PhD is funded for 3 years to work on a project concerned with employee information and consultation regulations on the island of Ireland. The project is being funded under a bi-lateral agreement between the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences (IRCHSS), Ireland, and the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), UK. The PhD candidate will be based at the Centre for Innovation and Structural Change (CISC), J.E. Cairnes School of Business and Economics, National University of Ireland, Galway (www.nuigalway.ie/cisc). The Northern Ireland partners are Dr James Donaghey and Professor Paul Teague, Queens University, Belfast. The project is expected to commence early May 2008.

roject Abstract
Public investment in partnership and cooperative industrial relations remains high on the agenda in both the Republic of Ireland and the UK. However, the current regulatory drive for employee voice may fundamentally alter the voluntarist nature of employment relations in both Ireland and the UK. This research aims to examine the impact and transposition of employee information and consultation regulations in two jurisdictions, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. The research will examine this through case studies of cross-border multi-site organisations in different economic sectors. The results will inform academic knowledge in the areas of employment relations and labour market growth models. It will examine the nature and impact of European labour market regulation for employee voice in a comparative context on each side of the Irish border. The findings will provide data on the unexplored phenomenon of cross-border responses to employment regulations, and in so doing make a contribution to the effectiveness, convergence and/or divergence of European level employment regulations.

PhD Stipend: €16,000, in addition to fees and travel expenses.
