A PhD scholarship is available at The Department of Maritime Research and Innovation (DMRI) of the University of Southern Denmark and Marstal School of Navigation (MARNAV). The scholarship is financed by the Danish Maritime Trust Fund, and aims to attract ambitious and skilled applicants with a global mindset and an interest in doing business oriented research.

Founded in 2005, DMRI is a relatively new department at the University of Southern Denmark’s Esbjerg campus. DMRI’s research program encompasses the following areas: a) global shipping markets and framework conditions, b) development of efficient maritime organisations through leadership and innovation, c) development dynamics in the Danish maritime cluster, d) designing efficient maritime transport systems and ports for short sea shipping. In contrast, MARNAV has a much longer history; there has been a school of navigation in Marstal, Denmark since 1860. MARNAV currently trains navigators for the Danish commercial shipping fleet. In recent years, the crews aboard commercial ships controlled by Danish interests have become international; ratings and officers are recruited from countries such as the Philippines, India, China, Viet Nam, the Baltic States, Poland, Russia and the Ukraine. Moreover, an EU Court has ruled that ship officers from all EU countries have the right to apply for employment on ships registered in the ship registers of all EU countries. On this basis, DMRI and MARNAV perceive a need to contribute with research, dissemination and development of teaching materials on the crew resource management-issues related to international crews. This research project will become a part of the above-mentioned research area b).

On this basis, we invite applications for the three-year PhD scholarship from persons with a relevant Master degree in the social sciences, business, the humanities, business psychology or pedagogy. Although the employed student will be inscribed at MDRI in Esbjerg a part of his/her working time will be spent at MARNAV in Mars¬tal. He or she must live in Denmark during the duration of the scholarship, except during the foreign research stay, as explained below.
Its main purpose is to improve the workplace environment on commercial ships owned by Danish interests through research in for instance:

• The expectations that Danish officers have concerning foreign officers and ratings’ behaviour on board ship
• The effects of frequent changes in crew composition on ship management and what shipowners can do to accommodate for potential adverse effects
• The expectations concerning management on board ship and officer behaviour in general that crew members from the Philippines, India, China, Viet Nam and Eastern Europe have
• To what extent diversity in expectations plays a role in relation to effectiveness, safety and the quality of life on board ship
• To what extent teaching in cross-national cooperation and in dealing with the problems that cul¬tural differences may cause is part of the above-mentioned countries’ maritime education programs
• If such teaching is in place, its quality and suitability should be assessed
• How to organise teaching and other learning activities concerning these aspects in Danish maritime education programs toward the goal of maintaining or improving effectiveness, safety and quality of life on board ship
• The influence that shipowners’ crewing policies or possible changes in these have on ship management

As part of the PhD program, an individual PhD education program composed of PhD-level courses, seminars, active participation at conferences and workshops must be completed. PhD-level course acti¬vities must add up to 30 ECTS points. The successful applicant will be expected to acquire experience of teaching and other types of presentation at MARNAV and other relevant maritime insti¬tutions. As a part of his/her PhD students, the successful applicant is also expected to have a guest re¬search stay at a relevant maritime research department outside of Denmark. Beyond this, the success¬ful applicant must be willing to make several research voyages on board commercial ships.

The scholarship is financed by the Danish Maritime Trus Fund. Therefore, it is expected that results from the research project are of a nature that they can be used to develop teaching materials as well as recommendations for maritime schools around the world and the shipping industry in Denmark. The translation of research into didactical materials and recommendations is however not expected to be a part of the Ph.D. programme itself.

Further information, including a background statement of purpose written by MARNAV-instructor Dr Collette Havsteen-Mikkelsen, PhD is available upon request from Associate Professor Maria Anne Wagtmann, PhD, phone: +45 65 50 15 30, e-mail: maw@sam.sdu.dk.
