The Human Geography Division (chair: Prof. Ulrike Müller-Böker) of the Department of Geography, University of Zurich is advertising a
PhD scholarship (SNSF, 3 years)
Closing date: February 15, 2010
The successful applicant will take part in an international research team working on the project Contested Rural Development, which is embedded in the Swiss National Centre of Competence in North-South Research Partnerships (NCCR N-S). The scholarship is offered according to the regulations of the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).
The project Contested Rural Development focuses on non-state actors and social movements in South Asia, which fundamentally challenge the state, and on the developmental dimension of these contestations. The aim is to understand the concrete development paths and opportunities such movements offer to rural poor in discourse and/or practice, and how these differ from the ones advocated by the state. The project’s Concept Note can be obtained from the e-mail given below.
Applicants should have a Master degree in Human Geography, Development Studies or another relevant social sciences discipline. The successful candidate is expected to carry out fieldwork either in rural areas of Nepal, India or Pakistan, or in two of them in a comparative manner. Candidates should send
- a letter of application and a full curriculum vitae including two names of possible referees
- a draft PhD research sketch in English (around 4 pages) within the broader theme of project on Contested Rural Development, incl. core research question and its justification; links to ongoing theoretical debates; possible empirical field research incl. localities; relevant literature.
At Zurich, we offer a challenging position among a dynamic team of PhDs and senior researchers involved in critical development studies, with opportunities for international contacts, further training through Graduate Schools, and the gaining of teaching experience in our Bachelor and Master courses.
